Let’s Stop Glorifying Busy: 5 Strategies to Help You Thrive!

“How was your day?”

“Busy. I didn’t even stop for lunch! How was yours?”

“Yeah, the same—busy!”

How many times have you had this conversation? I’m willing to bet too many times to count! We are all guilty of overextending ourselves to our breaking points. But to what end? In her book, Thrive, Arianna Huffington says that the traditional measures of success—money and power—encourage us to glorify being busy…often at the expense of our own well-being.

After finding herself lying on the floor in a pool of blood from a fall she took from sheer exhaustion, Arianna Huffington knows all too well the toll this kind of nonstop activity can take on our bodies and our health.

You want to be successful. I get it. But how about we try to get to that success without taxing our brain and our bodies with the negative health consequences from a constant go-go-go-and-go-some-more mentality?

Arianna Huffington says that there needs to be a third measure of success— thriving. When you are thriving you have time to look after yourself, you get enough sleep, you get enough exercise, and you take time to unwind (and you don’t feel guilty about it!).

Sounds good, right?

So let’s stop glorifying busy, and start thriving instead. Here are five strategies from Thrive to help you do just that:

1.) Redefine Success in Your Own Terms
At the end of the day (or your life), no one gets a prize for ‘most hours worked’ or ‘most money earned’, so why do so many of us base our feelings of success on these measures? Maya Angelou says, “success is liking who you are, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” I don’t know about you, but that kind of success sounds pretty damn good to me!

What is your definition of success? Are you living your life by this definition, or has the money/power definition been ruling the roost?

2.) Sleep Your Way to the Top
Get more sleep. The importance of sleep to our health, and ultimately, our success, cannot be overstated enough. We all know this, yet so many of us put our REM cycle at the bottom of our priority list. We even go so far as to brag about how little sleep we get each night, as though there is a prize for ‘Least Well Rested’. Have you ever found yourself boasting to a colleague, ‘I only got five hours sleep last night!’? I sure know I have!

What steps can you take to ensure you get a solid eight hours of shut-eye tonight?

3.) Self Care Isn’t Selfish
Making time for yourself—to rest, to exercise, to meditate, or whatever it is that makes you feel amazing—is not selfish. It’s smart. It just makes sense. When we feel amazing, we are able to give so much more to the people around us.

4.) Listen to Your Inner Voice
Your inner voice, or your intuition, has your back. Seriously, think about it: How many times have you had a ‘gut feeling’ about something, ignored it, and then got burned, wishing you had followed your inner voice all along? We all have. Learning to listen to your inner voice and allowing it to guide your decisions will help you to thrive, rather than simply strive…to exhaustion.

5.) Take a Digital Detox
This one is a biggie. I, for one, feel like my iPhone is an extension of me. It’s like an extra limb. The one time I went out without my iPhone, I felt so lost without it that I had to race home to get it first chance I got! Sound familiar?

Sounds like we could all use a digital detox!

So, gorgeous, in the comments below tell me what is the one thing you can do this week to help you thrive?
